It seems clear to me that IEEE is essential to the career growth of members in academia or working in research labs. However, IEEE cannot serve only academia. Relevance to industry, their management and practitioners is essential for the continued success of IEEE in the future. We must reduce our bureaucratic procedures to allow products and services to be launched faster when there is a clear industry demand. I would also support creating a separate area in Xplore where articles of interest to practitioners would be posted without following the same review process that is adopted for scientific papers. It is important to engage industry leaders in defining the content and distribution format of the services they feel are of interest and to create a forum in the IEEE unit governance structure for these leaders to contribute. Presently, standard development is one area within IEEE were there is substantial industry participation. We must create other opportunities. Last year as VP-Technical Activities I assembled an Industry Advisory Committee that made several contributions that are now being implemented through the New Technology Directions Committee (NTDC) that I chair. All the initiatives in NTDC are being led by high-level industry managers. It is also important that these new services be attractive in terms of price. |
